I just got a message from Daniel Smith Art Supplies that my Watercolor Kit will be back in stock this week.  Apparently the Arches Watercolor Journal (that I love!) has been out of stock all over the country for awhile.  This kit is great for travelers and beginner painters.  Here is a video where I show what you get in the kit:

At this point, I have started to add the leaves of the flowers and the shadows that the flowers have cast onto the stone wall.  I have also added a shadow on the right side of the window facing.  Notice too that I have lifted the window inside the dark area. – Almost done!

Here is my drawing of the window.  Notice that I do not draw every flower.  I just put a few lines in to remind me of where I plan to paint the flowers.

Why not put color in the dark areas of your paintings?  I never use tube black or grays but mix my own and add spots of unexpected color in the darks.  I like to make mixes in my journal of colorful darks, experimenting with different color mixes.  A dark window creates a perfect backdrop to show off a beautiful flower box filled with blooms.
