What’s on your Wish List, Art Ideas Part 2

What’s on your Wish List, Art Ideas Part 2

An Artist Wish List
My wonderful friend and fabulous artist, Pam Carriker, has come out with her own line of acrylic paints and inks!  She has also written several books, Art at the Speed of Light and Creating Art at the Speed of Light and has a brand new book coming out soon.
Her new line is called Matisse and is available for purchase with Jerry’s Artarama Art Supplies.  I was fortunate enough to be able to play around with some of her luscious acrylic colors and inks.
They are highly pigmented, light-fast and are perfect for working on watercolor paper and in your journals.  There are 12 colors with yummy names such as Poppy, Nightfall and Mustard.  The inks are washable while wet making them perfect for washes and calligraphy.  Pam is a very talented artist and continues to bring us new art play things to try.  Check them out!

Pam Carriker’s New Book, Creating Art at the Speed of Life

Pam Carriker’s New Book, Creating Art at the Speed of Life

It is filled with easy to understand lessons with step-by-step guidelines on how to do fun journaling ideas such as create a journal page of random shapes, making layers of textures and colors, and how to make the page cohesive with monochromatic colors.

I love how she introduces and explores the elements of design with a series of exercises and the completes the lesson with a worksheet to help you evaluate your work to make it more successful and satisfying.

As I sat down to look through Pam’s book, I could hardly sit still to read it as I wanted to jump up and do each and every activity that was presented in this colorful and lesson-filled book!

I especially loved the chapter entitled, Trompe l’oeil – fool the eye.  Pam teaches us how to take a photo and change its settings to “fool the eye” using shading.  I cannot wait to try this in watercolor art journal!

Thank you, Pam for giving us this beautiful, artistic gift.  I highly recommend it for the adventurous artist.

Class has Started – Artful Gathering Online Color Workshop

Class has Started – Artful Gathering Online Color Workshop

A really cool thing about the Artful Gathering Online Retreat is that you can take several workshops at the same time over a six week period.  Since I have always admired Pam Carriker’s art, I signed up for her online workshop, Still Pursuing Portraits and she is taking my workshop, The Good, the Bad and the Beauty of Color.  We are having a great time sharing what we know!  I love Pam’s style of teaching.  She has taken away the fear of drawing a face and broken it down into easy to follow steps.  I am so excite and looking forward to drawing some portraits today!
My class, The Good, the Bad and the Beauty of Color, has started!  So far, the chatter in the classroom has been very fun.  Here are a few things that the students are saying:
Melissa says “I am really excited, I have learned so much from your other tutorials, I’ve been impatient to start!!!”
Susan says “One advantage of being in Europe is that we’re already awake when the workshop is posted 😉  I’ve been waiting for this for ages and am really looking forward to getting started.”
Gina says “I’m very excited about this class as well! Any excuse diving into watercolor paints and learning more about color.”
Pam Carriker says, “I finished making my little color book using my Bind It All and some matt board for the covers. I filled my palette, had to clean out my gouache paints and fill them with watercolors since I already had this palette. Now on to color wheels and my first page:-)”

A Color Study Example

My workshop is about learning the properties of the paints you use, proper mixing techniques and how to use the color wheel to make different color schemes to use in your paintings. You will feel confident in your color choices and learn how not to get muddy color mixes.

There is still time to sign up and join the fun!  I hope you find time to add art to your daily life in one way or another.
Catching up in my Journal with Stencils

Catching up in my Journal with Stencils

I have been finishing a few pages in my Provence journal that I started during my recent trip to France.  My friend, Pam Carriker’s has a brand new line of art stencils and I took one with me to France to see how I could use it to enhance some of my journal pages.  Her stencils are quite fabulous and some of them deal with drawing faces.  We met for dinner not too long ago and had a wonderful time talking about art and sharing ideas.  She generously gave me one of her stencils that she knew I would love – the  Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Stencil.  I wanted to share some of my journal pages where I used her stencil.

Here you can see I used it behind the pitcher.

I used several stencils as the background for this page about Vaison-la-Romaine.  You can see where I used Pam’s stencil on the lower left.

I used Pam’s stencil to make this color wheel painting.

We are both teaching with Artful Gathering Online Art Retreat.  The second session starts on July 16, 2013.  If you have ever been interested in drawing faces, you will love Pam’s workshop, Still Pursuing Portraits.  My workshop, The Good, the Bad and the Beauty of Color is – well- you guessed it – all about color!  Be sure to check out all the creative and fun workshops available at Artful Gathering Online Art Retreat!

Finally here is the other side of the journal page – my painting from the day we spent at Vaison-la-Romaine….

Thank you all for a great Create!

Thank you all for a great Create!

I had such an amazingly fun and creative time at CREATE 2012
I just wanted to send out a huge colorful hug to all the students that attended my classes.  How fun to have Sally & Lori attend my watercolor classes again after meeting them in my class at Art & Soul Retreat several years ago!  Jeannine – I love my new Hello Kitty tin!  It is a welcome addition to my traveling watercolor palette collection.  Cindy and the other ladies from Texas you have a way of keeping us all smiling.  Rosanne & Shelly it was fun to be a part of your new watercolor journey.
Over all I wanted to share with everyone that CREATE, Irvine proved to be a friendly, colorful and creative place.  For those of you that asked me to come back next year – you will have to wait for 2 years as I will be teaching in Provence next May.
I do love all your suggestions and encouragement for me to teach online art classes.  Thank you Pam Carriker for giving me advice on how to set up an online class.  I will be exploring my options and let you know what happens!
I was lucky enough to treat myself to a class with the fabulous and colorful Joanne Sharpe in her fun Magical Marker Mystery Tour.  I feel rejuvenated and exhausted all bundled together.
I hope our paths will cross again!
Colorful hugs!
