Thank you all for a great Create!

Thank you all for a great Create!

I had such an amazingly fun and creative time at CREATE 2012
I just wanted to send out a huge colorful hug to all the students that attended my classes.  How fun to have Sally & Lori attend my watercolor classes again after meeting them in my class at Art & Soul Retreat several years ago!  Jeannine – I love my new Hello Kitty tin!  It is a welcome addition to my traveling watercolor palette collection.  Cindy and the other ladies from Texas you have a way of keeping us all smiling.  Rosanne & Shelly it was fun to be a part of your new watercolor journey.
Over all I wanted to share with everyone that CREATE, Irvine proved to be a friendly, colorful and creative place.  For those of you that asked me to come back next year – you will have to wait for 2 years as I will be teaching in Provence next May.
I do love all your suggestions and encouragement for me to teach online art classes.  Thank you Pam Carriker for giving me advice on how to set up an online class.  I will be exploring my options and let you know what happens!
I was lucky enough to treat myself to a class with the fabulous and colorful Joanne Sharpe in her fun Magical Marker Mystery Tour.  I feel rejuvenated and exhausted all bundled together.
I hope our paths will cross again!
Colorful hugs!

Creating Art at CREATE!

Creating Art at CREATE!

The Paintings on-the-go for the Traveling Artist class was filled with happy painters!  We did lots of painting and even went outside to get a lesson in drawing perspective as well as enjoying the beautiful sunshine.  Here are a few of the photos from our class:

LuSCioUs CoLoR!

THE most AMAZING package of luscious color arrived at my doorstep yesterday.  Each little creamy jar of Twinkling H2Os was more jaw dropping beautiful than the next!  These are made by Lumin Arte.  Oh where to start?    I want to try them all and can’t wait to see what they are capable of.  I did a very quick watercolor painting on a book page as I am getting ready to teach my Paintings on-the-go for the Traveling Artists class at the CREATE retreat in Irvine, CA next week.  It is hard to see in the photo below but they are transparent and have a stunning sparkle when dry!  My lucky students will get the chance to try for themselves how a fun these can be as there will be free samples for them to try!

Photo Paintings, A Slice of Life – Getting Ready to Teach at CREATE

One of the classes I am teaching at the Irvine, CA CREATE Art Retreat is Photo Paintings, A Slice of Life. Using watercolor and a section of your favorite photograph, I enjoy painting portraits, animals or landscape miniatures based on what is contained in the photograph.
Here I am with my Jack Russell Terrier, Mischa after hiking up Tumalo Mountain near my home, Bend, Oregon.  I brought my paints, watercolor journal and camera.  I took a self-portrait photo before hiking back to my studio to finish the photo painting.
Are you intimidated by drawing people? Don’t worry; the photo does the hard part for you!

Goodie Bags!

I am so excited to be one of the instructors at the CREATE Mixed-Media Art Retreat in Irvine, CA. May 30 – June 3, 2012.  One of my favorite things that I do when I get ready to teach my Watercolor Classes is to put together watercolor goody bags for each student.  They are filled with art prompts and useful items for creating art.  The Paintings-on-the-Go for the Traveling Artist class goodie bags will have my very favorite water-soluble pen.  I will be teaching many of the techniques that are covered in my just released DVD a Cloth, Paper, Scissors Workshop:  Art Journals On-The-Go: How to pack, prep, paint and more.

Rainbow Studies

For the PhotoPaintings: a Slice of Life class, I am bringing some fun, French color photos & postcards The Flips,Flaps, and Fold-Outs class goodie bag if full of texture makers and my favorite mini-spritzer.  The Rainbow Studies class goodie bag will have some new exciting colors to try!  There are still a few spots available if you would like to sign up!   Check the page link at the top of my blog for more information about each class.

Pick-Pockets in Buenos Aires

Pick-Pockets in Buenos Aires

The secret to a good pickpocket scam is when you don’t even realize that you are being pick pocketed.  Such was the event that happened to us while we were in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  On Easter Sunday we walked along several miles of an open air craft market on our way to the famous Sunday outdoor antique market in San Telmo Square.  My chance to finally do some shopping!  Everyone had been warning us to watch out for pick-pocketers in the market.  I had my purse crossways around my body the whole time with my hand on my zipper just waiting for someone to try to reach into my purse as there was no way they would be getting anything from me!
Scenes from the San Telmo Antique Market
After cruising through the market we continued our walk through a park that was alive with parakeets, kids playing and people out enjoying the day.  Unexpectedly from up above, a large amount of green, sticky bird poop fell onto my head, neck, back and all down David’s back too.   Stunned, I look up in the tree expecting to see a condor or flock of eagles or some huge bird.  A man sitting on the grassy knoll and witness to the whole event came up to us offering a torn bit of a third world type rough paper towel that he happened to have.   Amazingly a couple appeared seemingly out of nowhere with more tiny bits of paper towels and a bottle of water, offering to help wipe off the mess on our backs.
Scenes from the San Telmo Antique Market
The lady motioned to me to help wiped David while she proceeded to wipe off my back and purse which at that time I assumed had bird poop on it too.  One of the guys started wiping off his back and David felt him try to open up his Velcro back pocket where he had put his wallet.  Just about that time I asked David if he thought we were getting pick pocketed and he said he was wondering the same thing.  I quickly grabbed the zipper on my purse that I had so carefully been holding on to all day.  I was distracted by the thought of bird poop all over me.  I also had conflicting thoughts thinking these people are so nice to help foreigners while at the same time not  liking the fact that they were wiping me down.
Scenes from the San Telmo Antique Market
My purse zipper was opened by several inches!  Then suddenly just as quickly as they had appeared, they disappeared – empty handed, I am happy to say!  We then realized that the whole bird poop, guy on the grassy knoll and the unsavory couple had been part of an unsuccessful orchestrated pick pocket scam in Buenos Aires.

Painting of the Alta Vista Estancia

Fall is coming to Argentina and the colors of the poplar trees are starting to change.  We spent several nights at Alta Vista where we were warmly greeted by the hosts, Tamara and Frederico.  Alta Vista is a 60,000 hectare sheep ranch or estancia, which in Argentina means large farm or ranch.  It was built at the turn of the century and is located 20 miles west of Calafate in the Argentine Patagonia, and on the road to the Perito Moreno glacier.  Our rooms were delightfully decorated and this comfortable Patagonia estancia was a wonderful place for me to hang-out one morning painting the scene in front of me.

Tamara gave us a tour of the working part of the ranch where thousands of sheep are sheered every spring.
