Castles, Gargoyles and Such

Castles, Gargoyles and Such

Part of the fun of going on a trip and keeping a watercolor journal, is the excitement of finding new things to paint and and record in colorful ways.  We have seen castles, Chateau towers, gargoyles, river barges, and met some lovely people.  I did the exact same river trip down the canal DU Midi with my parents 30 years ago. Here is the only photo I have of that fun time.  To bad I was not an artist back then as it would be fun to see what I would have put in my journal.

here are a few pages from my journal that I have been working on during this trip.

if you are interested in joining me and doing a watercolor European style Journal, my next trip is to Orvieto, Italy. space is limited as there are just a few spots left for this fantastic watercolor trip.  – September 7-13,2014. we have a great group sign up!
Flip Flaps and Fold-outs on the Canal du Midi

Flip Flaps and Fold-outs on the Canal du Midi

When planning a trip and preparing my watercolor journal, I often make some of my favorite things that I call Flip, Flaps, and Fold-outs. I  am teaching this workshop at the Portland Art and Soul Art Retreat. I will be providing lots of goodies for my students.

These are items that I can easily find in the office supply stores. I use gesso and water colors to create a beautiful, color filled background. My family is traveling down the Canal du Midi in the south of France. I love having these easy tools to create quick paintings on the go and embellish my journal. Here are a few photos from my journal as I am painting on our barge.

Pages from my watercolor journal…

I am in the Dordogne area of France, famous for its pate fois gras, truffles, figs and nuts.  The medieval town is a maze of winding streets and picturesque alleyways.   We toured the Chateau Castel Naud, knocked down seven times during the Hundred Years War.  Not only was it a fascinating history of ancient weaponry but a painter’s delight of texture and charming buildings.

Here is the winding street that I painted in my watercolor journey.

The Beauty of Color

The Beauty of Color

My online watercolor class is going well and everyone is having a wonderful time learning how to correctly use color in their paintings.  There is still time to join in on the fun.  Registration is open until August 1, 2013.   Here is a small sample of some of the paintings from the class and what students are saying:
“Today I learned that I MUCH prefer tetras to triads! A good thing to know I suspect.”  Kaaren
Kaaren’s Pears
“I have enjoyed your class so much!  I hope you will do more soon.  I have your DVD and your book.  But I want more!  Putting miles on my brushes,
Karen”
“I love using the different color triads and compliments etc to make different works.”  Kristin
“I am so enjoying this workshop, and am really learning some things that I never learned in an art class before.  But I wanted to say that (in addition to finally understanding how a color wheel works) I love the idea of the chicken exercises and also the demo of transitioning the colors around the wheel, and “mixing, muddling and mingling…all great lessons, and I can’t wait to try them!”
Susan
Celeste’s Colorful Hearts
“I’m having a great time with these lessons. They are simple, but you learn so much about the paint itself and the colors.”   Celeste

Limited Color Palette

Limited Color Palette

I recently visited the Farnsworth Museum in the cute coastal town of Rockland, Maine.  It is so exciting to see what color palette great art masters like the Wyeth family uses.  N. C. Wyeth was an American artist and illustrator for such books as Treasure Island, Robin Hood and The Last of the Mohicans.  His son, Andrew Wyeth, was one of the best known artist of the 20th century and I have always admired his son’s work, James Wyeth.  The museum had pieces from all three generation of artists.  I was awestruck by the beauty that each of them could portray with a monochromatic or an analogous color scheme (if you are taking my online color class right now, you are familiar with these terms!).  Here below is an example from each of the Wyeths.  I chose these paintings to share because of their use of a limited palette.

“The Hunter” by N.C. Wyeth.  Powerful and bold – look at the beautiful use of a limited palette and a splash of red!

“Master Bedroom” by Andrew Wyeth.  This painting tells such a wonderful story, all again with a very limited palette.  I want to curl up with that dog!

James Wyeth, Beautiful use of limited palette of blues and yellows.

Painting on Location, Provence, France

Painting on Location, Provence, France

One of the challenges about painting on location is to find the right spot to sit.  First of all, it is important that you find a safe spot and you will be comfortable for a certain amount of time.  You will need to a good view of what you want to paint.  Don’t forget to bring:  your watercolor palette filled with watercolor paints, several brushes, pencil, eraser, something to hold water and water,  camera, and your watercolor journal.  Here are some photos of our fun group painting out and about in Provence, France.
